For the Best Views of the Heavens and Earth...
With Astronomical AdventuresArizona enjoys more clear sunny days and starry nights than any other state in the nation. The remarkably transparent air of the high country in Northern Arizona offers 100+ miles visibility by day and world-class views of the stars and beyond at night. Northern Arizona also enjoys very comfortable summer temperatures with highs typically in the mid-to-upper 80s, in contrast to the nearly unbearable temperatures of the central and southern parts of the state. With the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Sedona, San Francisco Peaks, Sunset Crater Volcano, Meteor Crater and many other mountains and canyons, Northern Arizona boasts one of the most scenic areas in the world.
Astronomical Adventures offers educational and recreational adventure vacations that uniquely combine these spectacular geologic wonders with star gazing experiences. Join expertly guided tours during the day and at night use telescopes up to 36" in di ameter from the middle of a 90,000 acre ranch 6,320 feet above sea level. The geologic stories the rocks represent are in many ways even more spectacular than the simple scenic views by themselves. In much the same way that reading a book breathes life in to it compared to just looking at the pictures, having the geologic stories interpreted breathes an insightful life into the scenic splendors beyond their stunning visual appearance. Geologic structures and formations seen during the day are compared and contrasted to similar ones throughout the Solar System in order to appreciate the Earth in its proper planetary context. The Museum of Northern Arizona, Lowell Observatory and the United States Geologic Survey are also toured to round out the day experien ces.
The Astronomical Adventures Observatory is more than 25 miles from the nearest street light and enjoys one of the darkest skies in the country, while being less than a one hour drive from the conveniences of tourist oriented and historic Flagstaff. Gue sts are guided through the night sky using naked eyes, binoculars, and an array of telescopes up to 36" in diameter. Stars and constellations are pointed out and basic telescope operation is demonstrated. Celestial objects are systematically viewed w ith spectacular clarity while they are described in general and specific detail in order to appreciate our place in the universe with its extraordinary contents and processes. Owner and guide Bob Woolley’s passionate enthusiasm and expertise combined with outstanding geologic and astronomical activities and specializing in small groups and families (typically less than 6 people without prior arrangement) offers a profoundly enjoyable experience.
Tours range from single day and/or single night programs, through the popular 6 Day/6 Night Discovery Program. Session specifics vary based on the phase of the Moon and guest preferences and are suitable for families, individuals and groups from novice to professional alike. Comfortable accommodations are available within walking distance of the telescopes. Visit
